What is Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT?
MTD for VAT is part of HMRC’s initiative to modernize tax administration by
requiring VAT-registered businesses to keep digital records and submit VAT
returns using MTD-compatible software via an Application Programming
Interface (API). It became mandatory for businesses with taxable turnover
above the VAT threshold (£85,000) from April 2019 and for all VAT-
registered businesses from April 2022, unless exempt.
Who needs to follow MTD for VAT rules?
All VAT-registered businesses must comply with MTD for VAT, regardless of
turnover, unless they have an exemption. New VAT-registered businesses
are automatically enrolled by HMRC unless they are exempt or have applied
for an exemption. Businesses below the VAT threshold can opt in voluntarily.
What are the requirements for MTD for VAT?
- Keep VAT records digitally using MTD-compatible software
- Submit VAT returns electronically via an API, not the HMRC portal
- Ensure digital links between data sources (e.g., invoices, receipts) and the software Avoid manual data entry Records must be preserved digitally for up to six years
How do I sign up for MTD for VAT?
Since April 2022, HMRC automatically signs up all VAT-registered
businesses unless they’re exempt or have applied for an exemption. You
need a Government Gateway account and VAT registration number to
connect your MTD-compatible software to HMRC. Agents require an Agent
Services Account (ASA) to act on behalf of clients.
What support is available if I’m struggling with MTD for VAT?
HMRC offers an Extra Support (EST) Service for vulnerable taxpayers.
Contact HMRC via their VAT helpline (0300 200 3700) or check GOV.UK for
guidance. Rural businesses may be eligible for gigabit vouchers (up to
£2,500) to improve internet access. Local IT support, YouTube tutorials, or
accounting professionals can also help
